How smart cameras can be used to check reusable packages
On Monday 23 October, Pack4Food, Flanders’ FOOD and Imec organized the demo event: Vision for smart reuse. During this afternoon five use cases demonstrated how smart camera systems can be used to check reusable packaging for contaminations and defects. The event took place at AMAB is a social enterprise for customized work where they already clean reusable cups via an automated washing tunnel, and is taking place as part of the EFRO project VISION2REUSE.
Hyperspectral cameras were used to investigate how different food packaging materials can be distinguished from each other so that the washing process can be proactively adjusted to the type of material. The cameras also assess the presence of water or organic residues in the packaging after the washing process to prevent, for example, mold growth. The RGB cameras were used to detect deformations and scratches in cups.
In the EFRO project VISION2REUSE, Pack4Food, Flanders’ FOOD and Imec joined forces to investigate the use of smart camera techniques for rapid quality control of reusable packaging. The two years project started on 1 January 2022 and received a grant of €324.422 from the European Regional Development Fund (EFRO).
